So over 100 years ago, prickley-pear cactus was imported from south america.  It is apparently a good water retaining food-source for cattle.  So, there are now a bunch of these everywhere.   Monkeys like to eat the reddish fruit and differed game animals fees on the cactus itself.   There are a few other species of cactus here also...all imported.
